60-year-old Grandmother pleads guilty to Sexual Battery

I post cases like the one below because they help to break the stereotypes around sex offenders.  Even when people do think of female sex offenders often the thought is of a female sexually abusing a male.  In this case the baby died from the abuse:

Grandmother sentenced in baby’s death

MONTICELLO – A 60-year-old Lawrence County woman was ordered to spend the next decade in prison Friday after pleading guilty to sexual battery in what was originally a capital murder case.

Mary Grandberry, of Silver Creek, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, by Circuit Court Judge Prentiss Harrell. The other 10 years of her sentence will be spent in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Grandberry pleaded guilty last month to sexual battery in the case of her infant granddaughter, Daria K’Mya Grandberry. The 4-month-old died of internal hemorrhaging at Marion General Hospital in Columbia on July 21, 2004, due to “complications resulting from molestation,” according to the coroner’s report.
